12v batteries are commonplace in an increasing number of applications today. There are two broad types. So called “Traction” batteries that are used to provide power for electric or hybrid vehicles ranging from industrial fork lift trucks to mobility buggies and golf carts and SLI (Starting, Lighting and Ignition) batteries. Traction batteries are designed to give power over a sustained period and are routinely used heavily during the day and recharged rapidly at night.
Flooded or wet lead acid batteries are the cheapest and most common and familiar traction 12v batteries available and will accept high charge rates and fast charging. They do require maintenance and topping up the electrolyte, can spill acidic and corrosive fluids, don’t perform vey well at very low temperatures and are susceptible to frost damage.
AGM batteries or Sealed Gel batteries are more expensive because it takes more time and materials to make them, however they tend to charge quicker and pack more power in a smaller package. AGM and Gel batteries will not crack or freeze and do not fail below -40° F (-38° C) which is why they are used in virtually all modern passenger jets that fly at altitudes where the outside air temperature approaches those values.
Powadrive has a quality section of AGM and gel 12v batteries for use in golf trolleys, electric wheelchairs and mobility buggies, caravans, motor homes, boats and pleasure craft, UPS and solar PV systems. Review our range of 12V battery types below.
