BATTERY FAQs

How do I get the best performance from my battery?

The performance of your battery is greatly affected by how you use and care for it. Follow these basic steps for maximum performance:

  • Your battery will arrive fully charged. However, it is worth giving it a top-up charge for a few hours before using it.
  • Your battery will reach its optimum capacity once you have used it for 8 to 10 times.
  • Only use chargers designed for deep cycle GEL or AGM batteries such as our PowaDrive 12v-4A charger. This is an intelligent, three-phase battery charger. Do not use car battery chargers; these will damage your battery.
  • Do not fully discharge your battery.
  • Don’t leave your battery in a discharged state. Always recharge your battery after you have used it.
  • If you store your battery for long periods of time we recommend you give it a charge once every other month.
  • Don’t keep your battery in extreme conditions, either hot or cold.
  • Keep your trolley or vehicle well maintained. Any undue load on your battery will reduce its lifespan.

What is the expected lifespan of my battery?

If you follow the guidelines above you should expect at least 300 cycles from your Deluxe AGM battery and at least 400 cycles from your Superior Gel battery. A battery cycle is one complete discharge and recharge cycle. A normal discharge is from 100% to 20% and then back to 100%. (80% Depth of Discharge - DOD) This is often referred to as a Deep Cycle.

What is the difference between an AGM and a GEL battery?

The chances are you were supplied with an AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) battery when you bought your trolley or electric vehicle. In these batteries, all of the electrolyte (acid) is contained in the glass mat. This means that they will not spill, even if broken and can be used in any orientation except upside down. They require no maintenance and, as they contain no liquid they are practically immune from freezing damage. The latest AGM batteries are approaching GEL standards and should give you in excess of 300 cycles.

The GEL batteries contain electrolyte (acid) that has been “gelled” by the addition of Silica Gel. This advanced technology offers all of the advantages of the AGM but in addition is more robust and will give you in excess of 400 cycles. Self-discharge rates are very low between 1% and 3% per month. This means they can sit in storage for longer periods than standard batteries.
